Q&A with Jesse

How did you get into taking pictures for a living?

I got started in photography at a very young age; my folks actually persuaded the local high school to let me use their darkroom when I was only nine years old! By the time I was 18 I was shooting weddings and portraits around the small town I grew up in. After high school I attended Spokane Fall Community College with photography as a main concentration, but it wasn’t until I went to Brooks Institute that my true passion for tabletop photography got going.

Tell me about your 360º photography studio setup! For starters, what kind of camera do you shoot with?

I have a 1000 sq ft. studio with a custom 360 lighting and table setup. I use Nikon equipment, such as the D700 and D810 with Nikkor prime lenses, and am able to adjust my setup to fit my client’s needs (anything from 12 to 36 megapixels depending on what is required).

What type of products are you particularly good at creating 360º views of? Do you have a specialty?

My specialty is “splash and pour” beverage work; I enjoy the mix of precise scientific measurements and the process of creating these types of images. That being said, each individual product has its own unique properties and I enjoy bringing out the hidden (or not so hidden) nuances of each product.

Describe your ideal client for shooting a 360º view.

I have worked with many different companies, from start-ups to clients with well over 3000 different products. Ideally I enjoy working with companies that allow me to spend the time it takes to make their products look their best. Not only does this represent the company’s product in the best light, it also allows me to embody the high standards for how my work should look.

For 360º photography, do you prefer shooting in high volume or low volume?

Although I am set-up to handle high volume, I prefer to stay in the middle of the road. The higher volume work keeps my prices lower but medium sized shoots (50-100 products) helps to improve the quality of imagery.

What kind of things do you do for fun? You know, outside of work?

Taking advantage of the beautiful outdoors is a key part of my life. When not in the studio I spend my time hiking and camping in the high country, fishing, snowboarding or rock climbing. To me there is nothing better than escaping technology for a while and recharging the batteries in nature.

How does your pricing work for 360º product photography?

What’s a memorable project you’ve worked on in the past?

Two shoots come to mind. I spent a good period of time shooting custom classic cars for a company called Timeless Kustoms. They were shot in a 30’x30’ cyclorama using a 10’x30’ custom built lightbank. The other was the summer of 2014’s trip to shoot salmon fishing at the head of Lake Chelan, Washington for Kayak Fish Magazine.
