Q&A with Kate

How did you get into taking pictures for a living?

While I have been obsessed with photography since I was in high school, I graduated with my second art degree in my mid 20’s and immediately started assisting for commercial photographers from Seattle and around the world.  I opened my own business after almost three years of working for other people and have never looked back. I’ve now been in commercial photography for nearly two decades.

Tell me about your 360º photography studio setup! For starters, what kind of camera do you shoot with?

Though I have worked with many types of equipment over the years, and every job has different needs and may require something specific, I have an affinity for Canon cameras and profoto lighting gear.  They are my go-to’s on a daily basis.  My studio is about 1,500 square feet and is generally full of music and good food.

What type of products are you particularly good at creating 360º views of? Do you have a specialty?

I promote myself as a food and lifestyle photographer, but enjoy shooting products in studio, especially 360 imagery.  I have photographed a variety products in 360, from shoes and toys to computers and shiny kitchen equipment.  Computers and shiny kitchen equipment are definitely the most challenging, which is – to me – fun (I like a challenge!)

Describe your ideal client for shooting a 360º view.

I love working with companies who love their products and appreciate good photography!

For 360º photography, do you prefer shooting in high volume or low volume?

I enjoy both large and small jobs, it’s the variety that keeps me excited about my work!  It’s important to me that whatever the job size, that we spend the time to do it right.

What kind of things do you do for fun? You know, outside of work?

It’s quite fortunate that I like my job, because it keeps me pretty busy!  When I’m not working, however, I appreciate nearly anything in the outdoors. Seattle is a mecca for hiking, biking, skiing and scuba diving (although all of those can be very wet and cold experiences here in the Northwest). I also appreciate tasty food, a good bottle of wine and time with good friends.

Who are some clients you’ve done work with in the past?

I have photographed everything from Microsoft game stations to the Costco cookbook, frozen food packaging to Seattle Chocolates.  The relationships I have built with my clients along the way are the most important thing to me.

How does your pricing work for 360º product photography?

I offer per-item pricing and price depends on how complex the item is. I offer custom estimates for each job in advance.   A small plush animal is easier to light and shoot than, say, a round, shiny object or computer screen which takes more skill, time and attention and will be more expensive.

What’s a memorable project you’ve worked on in the past?

While this has nothing to do with 360 photography, one of my most memorable recent projects involved traveling to Ghana to create web videos for a non-profit called Point Hope. The organization was involved in helping refugees learn new skills and create better, self-sustaining lives for themselves.
